Click on Southwold's Millenium Pier to see video images of Southwold's famous amusement arcade built and designed by Tim Hunkin.
While on the pier do not miss his water clock. Time your visit so that
you can see the clock 'perform' ( on the hour and half hour). Get there
a few minutes before time to ensure you catch the show. ( off season
the clock may not be working.
Tim Hunkin's amusement arcade is
like no other arcade anywhere. Pay your money and get your
prescription! Exercise with no effort! Take a trip on a submarine or an
armchair! I have even been known to pay for an unsuspecting holiday
maker to 'be frisked as he has never been frisked before' while I and
the rest of our party look on and enjoy the humour of it all! The copyright of the photo below belongs to- Martin Nordstrom
Walk along the shore to the harbour wall, turn right and walk beside the river towards the modern lifeboat shed and the Alfred Corry lifeboat museum. This museum is fascinating and well worth a visit. It has been a real labour of love and dedication. We would like to thank the two guides who gave us such an insight into the restoration.Click on the link above to see more about the story of this remarkable project.
You will soon come to the picturesque fishermen's huts, with fresh fish for sale. Here you
can buy fresh fish for supper or at Mrs. T's treat yourselves to delicious
fish and chips , (not only cod, of course, I love the grilled dover
sole.) Eat while sitting (hopefully in the sun) and watching the
boats and general busy activity.
Whilst
at the harbour be brave and take a trip on 'The Voyager'?
This is an exhilarating experience as Chris can tell you. He (along
with 11 friends and family) went on the boat as his birthday treat on
a day when the sea was really rough. They all loved it!
In season, we suggest you then catch the ferry - a little rowing boat - across the river ( time table) to Walberswick, perhaps stopping for afternoon tea on the Village Green before strolling back to Southwold along the river bank (a birdwatcher's delight), this time crossing the Blyth via a footbridge. You will come to The Harbour Inn where the extent of the 1953 floods is recorded on the wall outside. Time now, to sample a refreshing pint of Adnams beer before walking back across the common, past the golf course, towards 'home'.
In summer book your seats for the Southwold Summer Theatre. This is a highly professional theatre company with a well deserved reputation for delivering quality performances. 'Jill Freud & Company has produced professional theatre in Southwold since 1984 and in Aldeburgh since 1995. The Company achieves the highest standard of summer theatre production anywhere in the country.'
' the Rolls-Royce of Summer repertory.' Andrew Billen in The Observer.
