Chestnutt Studios
Come to see us in June, during our Suffolk Open Studios 'Open weekend'
Our studios are in part of a large, rambling, mainly mock Tudor folly with wonderful views over the Suffolk countryside. The house is attached to a stucco Victorian wing, which is actually older than the main house.
The major, mock Tudor section is, in fact, 'an extension', commissioned in 1912 by the then owner, Mrs Downing, whilst her husband Colonel Downing was away working in India. The facade hides a double height, galleried hall, built as a concert space for their 3 musical daughters. Now, it is used as a multi purpose space by us and by our friends. It is / has been an architectural/artist studio, a gallery, a space for table tennis, or band practice, a concert/drama hall, a party or family wedding venue etc. The walls truly do have tales to tell.In 1912 the extensive grounds were tended by 4 full time gardeners. Today, the remaining 2 acres are a wild life haven - home to, in season, rabbits, squirrels, muntjacks, pheasants, woodpeckers etc., all enjoying the small wood, erstwhile grass tennis court, croquet lawn and orchard. We try to manage it ourselves, but do not achieve anywhere near the high gardening standards of long ago.In the spring, the garden is at its very best with little human intervention. In summer, paths are mown through the long orchard grass. In Autumn, the virginia creeper on the outside studio turns a brilliant crimson. In December, Michael cuts down one of the fir trees (now over 10 metres tall) which he planted as 10cm seedlings when he was 15, and brings it into the hall for the Christmas and New year festivities. This Christmas, however, we had to rely on the help of friends, to bring in our tree. Michael and his wife had gone to her family in Argentina for a month( forsaking our snow and cold for an amazing summer trip to her vast homeland.) Winter brings its own beauty, a snow-fall transforming the bare branches into a winter wonderland. In 2010 Chestnutt Studios were open on 12th/13thJune. Demonstrations of paper making were given throughout the two days. Music at Chestnutt StudiosDuring last winter, the hall was the venue for a wonderful concert given by members of the Brook Street Band in aid of the village church. This year we are being treated to a concert by The Kertesz String Quartet, who will be performing Haydn & Mozart, playing on period instruments. copyright Judith Chestnutt 1/05/2010
