Chestnutt Cottage, our recommended holiday house, is only a 20 minute walk away from Southwold promenade, the award winning Southwold Pier and the town market square. Our highly recommended, well equipped, self-catering, semi detached, modern, holiday cottage has double glazing and gas central heating , so even if the North East winds do blow,if you rent our holiday home, you will be warm and comfortable after your days out exploring the beautiful Suffolk Heritage Coast.
The 4 photographs below were taken by Martin Nordstrom whilst he was visiting Southwold in December 2008. Yes, it really was a glorious day and yes, we breakfasted in our hut, looking out on that sparkling sea. (Rent our holiday cottage and you have the option to hire our beach hut)
Southwold pier
Southwold beach, the lighthouse and pier
Click on Southwold's Millenium Pier to see video images of Southwold's famous amusement arcade built and designed by Tim Hunkin. While on the pier do not miss his water clock. Time your visit so that you can see the clock 'perform' ( on the hour and half hour). Get there a few minutes before time to ensure you catch the show. ( off season the clock may not be working. In sum)
The amusement arcade is like no other arcade anywhere. Pay your money and get your prescription! Exercise with no effort! Take a trip on a submarine or an armchair! I have even been known to pay for an unsuspecting holiday maker to 'be frisked as he has never been frisked before' while I and the rest of our party look on and enjoy the humour of it all!

walking towards the harbour
Walk along the shore to the harbour wall, turn right and walk beside the river towards the lifeboat shed and lifeboat museum. You will soon come to the
picturesque fisherman's huts, where you
can buy fish for supper or perhaps treat yourselves to delicious
ready cooked fish and chips , (not only cod, of course, I love the grilled dover
sole.) Eat while sitting (hopefully in the sun) and watching the
boats and general busy activity.
Whilst
at the harbour why not be tempted to take a trip on 'The Voyager'?
This is an exhilarating experience as Chris can tell you. He (along
with 11 friends and family) went on the boat as his birthday treat on
a day when the sea was rough. They all loved it !
In season, we suggest you then catch the ferry -
a little rowing boat - across the river to Walberswick, perhaps stopping for afternoon tea on the Village Green before strolling back to Southwold along the river bank (a bird watcher's delight), this time crossing the Blyth via a footbridge. After a short river walk, You will come to The Harbour Inn where the extent of the 1953 floods is recorded on the wall outside. Time now, to drink a refreshing pint of Adnams before walking back across the common, past the golf course, towards 'home'.
In July and August book your seats for the Southwold Summer Theatre. This is a highly professional theatre company with a well deserved reputation for delivering quality performances.
'Jill Freud & Company has produced professional theatre in Southwold since 1984 and in Aldeburgh since 1995.
The Company achieves the highest standard of summer theatre production anywhere in the country.'
' the Rolls-Royce of Summer repertory.'
Andrew Billen in The Observer.
